Those That We Kneel To

A photography based performative installation, exhibited at Copeland Gallery in Peckham, London, December 2017.
This body of work challenges how religion is intrinsically woven into the fabric of rural Austrian life. Beneath this pious exterior, there is an under current of ancient traditions, rooted in this region and its natives for far longer than the Catholic Church has ruled this area. Nevertheless, women such as my grandmother Rosa Scherrer, maintain their (inconspicuous) role as matriarch.
Thank you, Rosa, for always offering me guidance and nourishment.

The content featured in the chatter boxes, which are a crucial part of this installation, has also been featured in “XX/XY Magazine”. The chatter boxes served as an invitation for visitors to sit on the church bench with me and fold them, while exchanging stories of childhood, traditions and history. They are also a homage to my childhood, when I had to go to church every Sunday and my father would fold chatter boxes with me to keep me occupied and quiet during mass.

I am incredibly proud of all that has been achieved, both in terms of having put on this exhibition and also managing to create this installation alongside it. Of course, none of this would have been possible without my colleague Tomasz Klimara, you hard work and support in putting on this exhibition will not be forgotten.
Thank you to everyone who came to see the exhibition and was involved in this body of work.
