meanwhile. -being generation y

A photobook by Antonia Mayer, Isabella Hewlett, Jana Sabo, Melanie Asböck and Pamina Aichhorn & DerFritz Grafik

Where do I come from? Where do I want to go? And how do I get there, do I even want to reach this point? These are just a few examples of questions, which all adults have found themselves confronted with at some point and which are far from being easily answered.

In search of perspectives, we set out to document the lives of five individuals from different cultural backgrounds: a film student in Belgrade, an English teacher in Vienna, a father in Kenya, a taxi driver in Cuba, and a music producer in Bangkok. What started as a photographic exploration of young adulthood soon became something much more personal. As part of the very generation we were portraying, we found ourselves reflected in the stories we captured.

I would have never guessed what an impact this project would have on my life. Not only did we go on to present the photobook at the ViennaPhotobookReview at Ostlicht (2015), but it was also shown at PrintEd Photobook Presentation at ArtsLibris Barcelona (2018) and the Pigeon Press Pop Up Shop at London Road Gallery (2018). More than that, this journey led to a lifelong bond with the people I met through Ben and this project. My love for Cornwall and the beautiful people there has only grown stronger ever since.

Through meanwhile, I invite you to reflect on your own path—perhaps even ask yourself:
Who would I be if I had been born somewhere else?
